  • My name is Samantha Awad, but I prefer Sam or Sammy (basically anything but Samantha). I am the Deputy Chief of Staff and the Director of Programs and Events. I am a sophomore, undeclared, but leaning towards an area in environmental sustainability. I was also an Executive Assistant to the Chief of Staff last year. One goal that I have for ISS is to get more students involved and to create a better name for the ISS. I am originally from northern New Jersey. In my free time I love to read, listen to folk music, hangout with friends, travel and take lots of pictures. I have a sister who is a graduate student here on campus and even though she is three years older than me, we look identical and tend to get mistaken for one another. I am looking forward to a great year in Student Senate!

  • Through my involvement in an array of activities, I have allowed myself to become a full-fledged member of the Illinois community and all of the wonders that it has to offer. As an attendee of an acclaimed and sincerely limitless university, I have developed the skills and mentality of a global citizen – a trait that I am especially proud of, and grateful for. My participation in the Illinois Student Senate, the Student Alumni Ambassadors, TEDxUIUC, Colleges Against Cancer, and various other organizations have given me the opportunity to give back to my peers, my beloved campus, and the social causes that I identify with, in the form of social action and contribution to the greater good. Without question, this academic institution has truly made me the individual that I am today. The welcoming environment instilled by the University, its faculty, students, and residents of Champaign-Urbana allow young, inexperienced, and curious individuals like myself to develop their understanding of themselves, and their place in an ever-changing world. By exposing me to an inclusive, diverse, and globally-conscientious campus, my worldview has been taken to the next level – as a student, as a resident of the State of Illinois, and as an Illini, past, present, and future.

  • I'm a senior in Advertising completing a Public Relations and Media Sales Certificate. As a music enthusiast I am a member of two athletic bands on campus, the Marching Illini and Basketball Band. I love being a part of the Illinois game day atmosphere and will support our sports teams no matter the score. As a senior, I wanted to expand my horizons and support the school in a new manner, so I got involved as the Social Media Manager for the Illinois Student Senate.

Digital Media Specialist Walbert Castillo wcasti2@illinois.edu
  • Position: Digital Media Specialist
  • Major: News-Editorial Journalism
  • Year: Junior
  • Hometown: Morton Grove, IL
  • Email:wcasti2@illinois.edu

My name is Walbert Castillo and I am the Digital Media Specialist on the external affairs staff team. I am currently a junior studying News-Editorial Journalism with a double minor in Spanish and Global Studies. I have previously served on the Philippine Student Association board as Philanthropy Chair. At the start of my term, I made a resolution to enlarge the scale of our outreach efforts and foster direct connections with entities far beyond our university. I am committed to empowering students to participate in enacting positive change both within the Urbana-Champaign community and within communities located farther away in the Philippines. This past summer, I provided aid and rebuilding assistance in areas of the Philippines most affected by Typhoon Haiyan, and I am in the process of finishing a documentary that would cover my experiences and shed light on other post-disaster efforts being executed in the area. For my free time, I enjoy playing the piano, choreographing hip-hop dancing, taking photographs and traveling the world.
